Electronically Tintable Glass in Building Envelopes – A Project Showcase
Dr. Helen Sanders, SAGE Electrochromics, Inc.
We live in a dynamic environment, but until now our building envelopes have been static in nature – unable to effectively control the flow of the sun’s light and heat into buildings from hour to hour and from season to season. Electronically tintable glass provides the means to develop a dynamic façade with variable visible light transmission and solar heat gain coefficient, which saves cooling and lighting energy, and solves problems of excessive solar heat gain, glare, fading and the need for unsightly blinds. In fact, the US DOE states that their goal of a zero energy building in 2030 cannot be achieved without the use of dynamic glazing. Electronically tintable glass is commercially available and is being actively specified and installed in building envelopes. The presentation will focus on reviewing a number of diverse case studies to demonstrate the application of dynamic glass in different building types and glazing applications to achieve different objectives such as glare control, heat control and occupant comfort. The glass installation process, system integration and other supply aspects will also be discussed.

2:20 pm – 2:50 pm The Future of High Thermal Performance Fenestration
Mark Silverberg, Technoform NA, Inc.
Albert Stankus, Technoform Glass Insulation NA, Inc.
This presentation will focus on the rapidly changing thermal performance requirements for commercial fenestration and how our industry can successfully and profitably adapt to these changes. We’ll discuss what’s driving these changes, and where the codes are going. We’ll look at examples of other countries that have already traveled this path and what we can learn from them. The relationship of performance requirements for the fenestration industry to the big picture of the drive for national energy independence will also be discussed. In conclusion we’ll discuss the profitable opportunities for those companies who adapt quickly to this new environment.
